Who are the Madan Saras? Who are the Flea Market, Swap Meet or Street Vendors? Paying Tribute to Madan De, a Madan Sara!

Who are the Madan Saras?

Who are the Madan Saras? Madan Saras are female Haitian merchants, street vendors who are the principal accumulators, movers, and distributors of domestic produce in Haiti. They are the link between the rural peasant farmers and the city dwellers. They bring the farmers' harvest to the local market. They walk long distance while carrying the produce on their head, donkeys, horses, mules, wheelbarrow, buses, trucks etc. They fold hankerchief to be able to carry vegetables to the market. They got up early so they can sell well. They are the drivers and backbone of the informal Haitian economy. Mrs De was one of the best Madan Sara that Gran Gowav / Grand-GoĆ¢ve has ever produced. A huge part of Haiti was blessed thanks to her efforts and her hard labor.

As soon as the roosters started crowing and the dogs started barking, Madan De was up in the house. She was going to the kitchen in the year and her work on the front porch.
